Hello!

My Name is Deanne Duffy and I am the art instructor here at Our Lady of Grace School.  I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself.  Like any good art instructor, I love to sew, draw and paint, which also makes me an expert of stain removal techniques should you ever need any advice.  What you might be surprised to learn is that I also enjoy baking bread, rollerblading and practicing pilates in my free time.  I am a huge fan of Disney art and film.  On my days off you can find me at the park taking in the sights and rides not to mention a delicious Dole Whip!

My JOYFUL journey as an arts educator evolved over time
beginning with a degree in fashion design with an emphasis in art history and costume design.  Working in the industry was exciting however, I longed for something more!  So, I went back to college to pursue a bachelors degree.  Immediately, I found myself drawn to working with children.  I had wonderful mentors and spiritual advisors who provided me with job opportunities and much needed encouragement to take on new challenges which ultimately led to a vocation in teaching. Thirty years later, one of the many blessings of my artful journey is coming home to the Catholic Church and working once again in a Catholic School!

This trimester in art, your student will be doing all sorts of amazing things.  We'll learn about color theory, drawing techniques and basic construction.  We'll also take a look at some of  California's historical architecture and explore fiber arts making skills.  All the while, I'll be pulling in math, language arts and social studies, faith inspired connections for some exciting cross-curricular learning.  It is my goal that all students will leave art with a strong capability to solve problems creatively,
which is a highly sought after skill in today's world.

The class expectations are below.  Please review and talk about them with your students.

1. Respect other students and the adults in the room.
2. Respect the art materials and classroom space.
3. Think like an artist.
*If students are having significant trouble following the expectations. I will be sure to let you know so we can work on a solution together.

I believe that for students to be successful at school, we need to work as a team.

Please feel free to contact me with concerns or questions about your child's art education.  My hope is that your child will have the absolute best art class experience possible and gain new skills and confidence throughout the school year.

Thank you so much for reading! I look forward to seeing you at OLG Night at the Movies on September28th.  Don't  forget we have our Annual Art Faire on Friday February 1st here at the school in Lauerman Hall.

Artfully Yours,

Deanne Duffy
